Dividing Line

North Carolina is a Metes & Bounds state so most deeds contain names of people other than just the buyer and seller. Tyrrell County's records are intact back to the beginning of the county (1729) but Washington County's courthouse burned on three occasions, the last during the Civil War. The only records that were saved each time were the Deed Books so it is to these records (from 1799) that researchers must go to search for information on their ancestors prior to the Civil War. Hopefully by the time you have glanced through the following abstracts you will understand just how much information is contained within Land Records. (If you don't understand land records go here. To see a sample deed go here)

These are abstracts of copies of deeds have I collected (or other researchers have shared with me) in my research for my family lines of Davenport & Ambrose. In the deed books, deeds were recorded one after another so there is often a part of another deed on the same page as my deed of interest. I'll also abstract these fragments. Names found in the deed will be listed in red above the abstract.

If you have any deeds you would be willing to share please let me know. [an error occurred while processing this directive]

Copies of any deeds you may be interested in may be ordered from the Washington County Courthouse, 120 Adams Street, Plymouth, NC 27962. (phone: 252-793-3013). I do not know the current charge for copies. Please check with the courthouse.
