New England or Township Survey
The Township survey or New England Survey was used (of course) primarily in the New England states. The survey used a modified metes & bounds system in conjunction with roughly square plots. Land was reserved for the town square and common grazing land. Plots (or sometimes lots) available to individuals were normally numbered and the number coupled with a metes & bounds description completed the legal description.
