Son of Thomas Davenport of Cumberland Co., Va.

 James Davenport, son of Thomas Davenport of Cumberland Co., Va. was born by 1720 in order to be 21 when he purchased land in Goochland Co. in 1741. He was either the eldest son or the second son as shown by the 1771 Cumberland deed where he is designated as the heir at law to his deceased brother Joseph.

15 Sept 1741 (Goochland Co. DB3,p. 450) Daniel Terry of St. James, Goochland to James Davenport for 60 pounds, 200 ac. as by patent 17 Mar 1736.

28 Nov 1750 (Cumb. Co. CO 1749-1756 Abstracts) - ordered that John Woodson, Thomas Davenport Sr., James Davenport, James Terry, Henry Davenport, William Arnold and his sons, Thomas Davenport JR., Daniel Terry, Daniel Coleman Sr. and others repair a road from William Womacks upper path to the Buckingham Road at Thomas Davenports lower path.

Though there is not yet adequate proof that James Davenport's wife Catrim or Catherine was a Dejernett, this will and the fact that descendants used the name [see Dec 1816] provide a good reason for searching Dejernette records for additional information.

11 Sept 1754 (Pr. Edward Co. Will Abstracts - TLC Genealogy) - will of Dan Dejarnett names wife Martha, daughters Mary, Betty Ford, and Martha, sons Daniel, mumford, John, Chirstopher with exec. named wife martha, Richard Perryman and James Davenport and witnessed by jacob Mackgehee, henry Johnson and Catherine Davenport.

2 May 1763 (Halifax Co. DB4) Lewis Jenkins of Halifax to James Davenport of same sells 400 ac. in county on the Bold Branch of Dan River part of a tract granted Robert Bolton and witnessed by Richard Echols, James Daniel, Bedford Davenport.

Mar 1764 (Cumb. Co. OB) Hugh McDonald vs. James Davenport abates the def. being no inhabitant of this county.

25 Feb 1765 (Halifax Co. DB5) Lewis Jenkins of Halifax co. to James Davenport of same sells 700 ac. in Halifax on both side of the Cold Branch, branches of Mury Creek adj. Windfrey, Robert Kent, above named Davenport's old line and witnessed by Richard Parker Sr., Richard Daniel.

31 Aug 1771 (Cumb. Co. DB5) James Davenport of Halifax Co. to William Davenport of Cumb. Co. sells 200 ac. in Cumb. Co. adj. Harrison Jones, John Jones, Little Guinea Creek, Thomas Davenport, Henry Davenport, sd. 200 ac. formerly the property of Joseph Davenport dec'd. now claimed by James Davenport heir at law to sd. Joseph as sd. Joseph died without a lawful will...witnessed by Gideon Glenn, Henry Davenport, Thomas Davenport Jr., Henry Ransome.

27 Apr 1774 (Halifax Co. DB9) Thomas Davenport of Cumberland Co. for and in consideration of James Davenport becoming security for payment to John Fisher....have sold to James davenport 3 negro slaves.

This is Thomas Davenport Sr.'s second will. James is mentioned in both however.

29 Dec 1774 (Cumb. Co. WB2) Thomas Davenport of Littleton Parish to son James, son Thomas, son Henry, son Julius a deed to him for 100 ac., son William, grandson William, son of Stephen Davenport dec'd., daughter Drucilla Glenn, granddaughter Molly and grandson Stephen, exec. Thomas, Henry, and William Davenport and Gideon Glenn and witnessed by David Davenport and Shearn Cook, proved 25 Sept 1775.

16 Mar 1780/ 18 May 1780 (Halifax Co. WB1,p. 308) James Davenport to son Bedford half my land adj. Thomas Davenport and John Winfrey, son James remainder, daughter Rhody Davenport, Catrim Davenport, Mourning Davenport, Anna Davenport, and wife Catrim Davenport..."and the stock of horses that was my son Joseph's being at my disposal I leave them equally divided among daughters". My theory here is that Joseph is deceased. Were he still living he would surely have sold the horses to father so there would be no problems with disposing of them later. Then James would not have mentioned them in this fashion. He would have left HIS horses to daughters.

5 Jan 1787 (Halifax Co. DB14) To all...I Samuel Comer of Halifax for love and affection...to daughter Annis Davenport and Bedford Davenport her husband and in consideration of sd. Annis and Bedford supporting me and maintaining me as I am now unable through misfortune to do same for myself...sell to sd. Davenports three slaves...and witnessed by Thomas Davenport, John Woodson, William McCraw Jr., Robert Easley. See Bible Records below for further on Annis Comer.

Davenport of Halifax Co....being of lawful age and desirous of disposing of what would be coming to me from a negro woman named _____ who was given to me and my sister Annaliza Davenport by our Uncle Bedford Davenport for which gift of record of court of Halifax. After debts are paid...remaining estate to sister Susanna Dejernett Davenport. Exec. Uncle Bedford Davenport. I haven't found the deed for this transfer from Bedford to Betsey and Annaliza.

I put the following two records here because I think this is Bedford's brother James, only because nothing else seems to fit.

26 June 1823/2 Nov 1823 (Halifax Co. WB13) will of James Davenport of Halifax to wife Jane E. davenport whole of estate both real and personal during life to dispose of as she may chose and her as sole exec....witnessed by Anderson Holloway, James H. Davenport, and Joseph A. Davenport.

22 Mar 1852 -James Davenport/Jane Nelson - Joseph A. Davenport of Halifax Co. 22 Mar 1852 age 47 yrs., resident of county, his mother Jane Nelson was the widow of James Davenport, the two were married c. 1796 in Halifax Co. and father died 1823, Jane married John Nelson 1829 and he died 1835. She died 28 Dec 1849. Surviving children include James H. Davenport, Joseph A. davenport, Thomas T. Davenport, Benjamin F. Davenport and Wilson Davenport all still living.

2 Aug 1832 /27 Aug 1832 (Halifax Co. WB16) will of Bedford Davenport of Halifax Co. to son Stephen, to son Smith, to daughter Betsey Henning wife of David F. Hening heretofore the wife of Thomas Douglas now deceased, to daughter Rebekka Kent, to my children named foregoing the slaves given them have been in possession of each long since. To the children of my daughter Betsey by her first husband Thomas Douglas deceased....to them or their heirs to wit Lucy Hart, Martha Henderson, Bedford, John and Edward Hart children of my granddaughter Harriett Hart deceased. To granddaughter Amanda Boyd, Exec. son Stephen, friend Thomas Easley.

Bible Records of Bedford Davenport from Va. State Library Records - Bedford Davenport and Annis his wife was married the 4th day of ____ month 1771 and lived together 59 years, 3 months, and 3 days. Bedford Davenport was born 21 November 1748 and departed this life 16 August 1832 aged 83 years, Annis Davenport was born 6 January 1752 and departed this life 7 Ma-1830 age 78 years 2 months and one day, Betsey Davenport their daughter was born 29 June? 1773, Stephen Davenport their son was born 7 April 1775, Smith davenport their son was born 13 December 1776. Nancy Davenport their daughter was born 23 March 1778 and died 24 Aug 1805, Rebekah Davenport their daughter was born 18 August 1780.

James Davenport, son of Thomas Davenport of Cumberland was born c. 1715, married Catherine DeJernette by 1747 and had children Bedford, Joseph, James, Rhody, Catrin, Mourning and Anna. He died by May 1780 in Halifax Co. Va. Bedford Davenport was born 21 Nov 1748, married Annis Comer, and died 16 Aug 1832. Their children were Betsey who married Thomas Douglas and David F. Henning, Stephen who married Lucy Green, Smith who married Frances Davenport in Ogelthorpe Co., Ga., Nancy who died, and Rebecca who married John Kent. James Davenport son of James Davenport died by Nov 1823, was married to Jane E. who later married John Nelson. The children of James and Jane Davenport were Betsey T. who married Charles Mays, Annaliza, Susanna Dejernette, James H. who married Margaret Loftis in 1829, Thomas T., Benjamin F. and Wilson who married Jane Goodby in 1830.
