Although my essay on Census Records is confined to Federal Census Records, no researcher should ignore the wonderful information that can be found in State and sometimes local census records.
States often took their own census for one reason or another and usually (this is really important) between the Federal Censuses dates. These state census records can give you additional information on family members, help place a family in a given place at a given time and often add considerably to the information found on the Federal Census.
This is particularly true of School Census Records which usually list each child, their age, whether they are or were attending school and the name of the parents. These School Censuses can name many children that were born and died between the Federal Censuses for which no other record exists.
Most of the State Censuses are not indexed and those that still exist are sometimes difficult to locate. Contact the state archives in your state of research and inquire about the availability of state and local census records. Check all of the LDS catalogue listings for available state censuses and above all be prepared to sit in front of a microfilm reader and read these censuses line by line.
For those people researching Native American ancestry there are numerous censuses available. One of the best listings of the availability of Native American, state and local censuses, that I am aware of, is THE SOURCE available from many sources.
Many, if not most, genealogy libraries have a copy of this book. Here is a list of State Censuses that are known to have been conducted. Some of these may no longer exist or may be incomplete.
